Stillbirth is when a baby dies in womb after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Most stillbirths happen before a woman goes into labor. However a few percentage happens during labor and delivery.
What are the causes of stillbirth
There are many possible causes. Some of which include the following :
Placental problems : The placenta provides oxygen and nutrients to the unborn child. Any interruption to this process can result in death of the baby. Some placenta issues include placental abruption . Blood clots , inflammation and problems with the blood vessels in the placenta can also cause this condition .
Pregnancy complications : Pregnancy complications can also result in this condition. They include the following :
- overdue pregnancy
- diabetes
- high blood pressure
- lupus
- obesity
- preeclampsia
- preterm labor
- preterm premature rapture of the membrane
- trauma and injuries
- thrombophilias
- thyroid disorders
Conditions in the baby : These include :
- birth defects or genetic conditions
- not getting enough oxygen during labor and delivery
- Rh disease
Infections in the mother, baby and placenta : Some infections may be asymptomatic until they result in a pregnancy complication or death of unborn child. These include :
- cytomegalovirus
- fifth disease
- genital and urinary tract infection
- toxoplasmosis
- listeriosis
- syphilis
However you have to know that the causes of many stillbirths still remain unknown.
