Seizures are sudden , temporary changes in physical movement which is caused by abnormal electric impulse on the brain. They are quite common especially in infants and young children. During a seizure, a child’s body may experience violent convulsions, stiffen suddenly or completely relax.
There are a wide range of causes. Most seizures are not medical emergencies but the child still needs to be examined by a doctor to determine the cause.
What should i do if my child is having seizures
- The first thing you have to do is to direct your attention towards protecting your child from injuring himself during the seizure.
- Lay the child on his side with his hips higher than his head . You can also place the child in a semi sitting position so that he does not choke when he vomits
- Remove any objects nearby and loosen any clothing around the head or neck
- If the seizure last for more than 2 to 3 minutes or one seizure occurs after the other, call 911 immediately.
Do not leave your child unattended during a seizure.
