UTI’s are the most common bacterial infection in adult women. They also the most common medical complication during pregnancy. It is rarely serious when treated early and quickly. However if left untreated, it can lead to kidney infections or even death in rare cases.
UTI occurs when bacteria enters the urethra and causes an infection. This bacteria is usually eradicated by urination, however certain circumstances can increase your risk of getting urinary tract infections. These include :
- pregnancy
- sexual intercourse
- urinary obstruction
- virulent bacteria
What are the symptoms of UTI
Some women may remain asymptomatic while others may experience the following symptoms .
- high fever
- pain in the lower back
- vomiting
- burning sensation during urination
- increased frequent urination
- chills
A doctor can use your urine sample to determine if you have UTI or not. If you do have the infection, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics that are safe to take during pregnancy.
However you have to know that there are certain ways to prevent or reduce your risk of urinary tract infections.
Ways to prevent or reduce your risk of UTI
- drink cranberry : Pure 100% cranberry juice with no added sugar may prevent UTI’s because of its infection fighting properties. You can discuss with your doctor before drinking cranberry juice is you are medication. Drinking cranberry juice while on the blood thinning medication warfarin may lead to bleeding.
- drink lots of water : This helps dilute urine and flushes out bacteria that may be present
- wipe from front to back : After using the bathroom, wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from the anal region spreading to the urethra and vagina.
- avoid drinks that may cause irritation to the bladder : Alcohol, coffee and soft drinks containing caffeine or citrus juice may irritate the bladder
- empty the bladder after intercourse : It is crucial to try to flush out any bacteria that may have entered the urethra by drinking a full glass of water and urinating soon after intercourse
- dont use irritating feminine products : Certain products such as douches, deodorant sprays and powders can irritate the urethra and cause UTI
