Choosing the right bicycle size
Choosing the right bicycles size is very important to prevent injuries. Wrong bicycle size can cause the child to lose control and get hurt.
Choosing the right bicycle size : Recommendations of the American Academy of pediatrics
- do not force your child to ride a 2 wheeled bicycle until she is ready at about age 5
- take your child with you when you go bicycle shopping so that she can try it out. It is better to get the child a proper fitting bike than to surprise her
- you should get a bike that is the right size than one that your child will grow into. Over sized bicycles are dangerous
How to test any size of bike for proper fit
- Your child should be able to place the balls of both feet on the ground when sitting on the seat with her hands on the handle bar
- your child should be able to stand with both feet flat on the ground with about a 1-inch clearance between the crotch and the bar while straddling the center bar
- make sure that the child can comfortably grasp the brakes and apply sufficient pressure to stop the bike when buying a bike with hand brakes for an older child
Whenever you buy a bike , be sure you have a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)-approved helmet for your child.
Stick with coaster brakes until your child is older and more experienced.
