Drooling is common in babies. It is when a saliva unintentionally flows out of a child’s mouth. It becomes apparent around 3 to 6 months. This increased flow of saliva may indicate the appearance of a new tooth. However if it is excessive and the child looks ill , he may have problem swallowing and needs immediate medical attention.
What is the importance of drooling in babies
Drooling serves several important functions and these include the following :
- keeps the baby’s mouth moist
- softens and moistens foods once baby has been introduced to solids
- washes away food residue
- makes it easier for your baby to swallow
- protects your baby’s teeth
You should also know that saliva contains ptyalin, a digestive enzyme that changes starch into sugar. A natural antacid in saliva also neutralizes stomach acid and aids in digestion. Saliva also protects against tooth decay.
WARNING
If your child is suddenly drooling and can’t speak or is having trouble breathing, she may be choking on food or a foreign object. Call 911 or the emergency number right away. While waiting for emergency help, follow first aid procedure related to choking.
