Cooking with your child is a great way to encourage your child to make good food choices. Get your child involved in the entire process from menu , shopping, to actual preparation and serving .
Plan the menu with your child and include all the important food groups. Let your child know the benefits of choosing low-fat foods over high fat types and why high fiber food varieties are good.
You can make the cooking process fun by letting her choose recipes that she and the family have enjoyed in the past so that she knows what is involved in the preparation.
Before you give your child a task to do, make sure it is age appropriate. For example do not give your 6-year-old a sharp knife to chop vegetables or tell her to remove a lager , hot-pot from the oven.
Tips to guide you while cooking with your kids
- make sure your child is never cooking alone in the kitchen. There should be an adult present all the time
- teach your child how to measure and weigh ingredients
- show your child how to point sharp objects away from her
- teach your child the importance of using pot holders when touching hot saucepans
- shut off the ovens and burners when you finish cooking
