The American Academy of Pediatrics AAP considers isolated soy protein based formula safe and nutritional equivalent alternative to cow milk based formula for full term infants. However , it should not be the first choice of artificial milk for babies. Check with your baby’s doctor before giving her soy formula.
The AAP recommends that soy formula be used during the following situations.
- full term infants with galactosemia or hereditary lactase deficiency
- full term infants with documented transient lactose deficiency
- infants with documented immunoglobulin E-associated allergy to cow milk who are not allergic to soy milk
- parent seeking vegetarian based diet for a full term infant
Who should not consume soy formula ?
This formula is not for :
- preterm babies with weight of less than 1800 g
- prevention of colic or allergy
- infants with cow milk protein induced enterocolitis or enteropathy
