What are the possible causes of anal itching in children ?

Pinworms : These are parasites that live in the intestine. You can  get infected by ingestion microscopic pinworm eggs. Young children may not practice good hygiene and put their hands in their mouth . As a result they can be easily infected .

An infected child can spread the infection by touching his infected anal area and touching other children’s hands or food. These eggs can also get on toilets seats, toys, clothing and bedding. You can also get these eggs  on surfaces where you change your child’s soiled diapers.

Pinworm is common in preschoolers and their caregivers. Some children may remain asymptomatic.

Poor toilet hygiene : Poor toilet hygiene is common in children. When girls do not wipe after urinating or boys and girls dont wipe well after having a bowel movement , it makes the skin in that area irritated and this causes itching.

Perianal strep : This is suspected in infants and toddlers with very red, itchy or painful skin next to the rectum. Other members of the family may have strep throat infections.

Tight or small clothing : If you put on tight or small clothing over the anal area in your child, it may cause irritation and the child to frequently clutch or pull his clothing.

What parents can do

You need to consult your pediatrician to find out the cause of the anal itching. If your child has pinworms, you have to wash your child’s linen, clothing and towel in hot water. You need to use  a high heat setting when drying. It  is important that you dont shake  the items. This will scatter the eggs.

You also need to do the following :

  • trim your child’s nail short
  • be sure to wash your child’s hands in the morning , before breakfast and before any meal or snack.
