Sperm allergy is sometime called semen allergy or seminal plasma hypersensitivity. It is a rare allergic reaction to proteins found in man’s semen. Women who have an allergic reaction to their partner’s sperms, may have the same problem with other men’s semen. This condition does not cause infertility , although symptoms may make it more difficult to conceive. If your symptoms are severe, in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination may be other options you have.
What are the symptoms of sperm allergy ?
Some of the symptoms of this condition include the following :
- burning , itching and swelling within a few minutes to an hour after contact with semen
- hives
- dizziness
- trouble breathing
- anaphylaxis
If you experience any of these signs after coming into contact with semen, contact your doctor.
How is sperm allergy treated ?
You will need an allergy test to determine if you’re really allergic to semen. If you do , treatment to desensitize your allergic reaction to your partner’s semen may allow you conceive naturally. However ,if your case is severe, the doctor may recommend in vitro fertilization or artificial insemination ( using sperm washed free of semen proteins to prevent a reaction).
Antihistamines and using condoms may also help.
