Toothache can be distressing for children and parents as well. It may be a dental emergency but not all mouth pain are caused by toothache. Mouth pain may also be caused by
- teeth eruption
- earache
- sore in the mouth
- sinus infection
A child with mouth pain should see the dentist or medical provider to identify the source of the pain.
What causes toothache
Some of the causes include the following :
- tooth decay
- gum disease
- dental abscess
- stuck food
Parents should look out for the following when dealing with tooth decay.
- drooling
- mouth pain
- ask the child to pinpoint the tooth that hurts if he is old enough
Remedies for toothache
You should know that most toothaches do not last long. They are as a result of sensitive teeth. If pain persists and get worse after 24 hours, get medical help. In the mean times, these remedies may relieve pain .
- floss either sides of the painful tooth to dislodge any stuck food
- pain medication such as Tylenol or ibuprofen can be used to relieve pain
- put a cold pack on the painful jaw for about 20 minutes
Mild toothache goes way within 24 hours. However if pain gets worse or doesn’t go away, take the child to see a doctor.
