Postpartum depression is a common feeling which affects 1 in 8 women during the first 8 months after childbirth. It is depression suffered by a woman after childbirth. It typically arises from a combination of hormonal changes, fatigue and psychological adjustment to motherhood.
It may be mistaken for baby blues at first but postpartum depression is more intense and lasts longer. It may even affect your ability to take care of your baby and handle daily activities. Symptoms usually develop a few weeks after birth but may develop later up to 6 months after birth.
What are the symptoms of postpartum depression ?
Symptoms of postpartum depression may include the following :
- severe mood swings
- crying or fearfulness
- anger toward your parents , baby or family members
- anxiety or panic attacks
- difficulty concentrating or remembering
- difficulty bonding with your baby
- loss of appetite or eating more than usual
- extreme fatigue or loss of energy
- inability to sleep or sleeping more than normal
- fear that you’re not a good mother
- feeling of guilt, doubt, hopelessness , helplessness or restlessness
- headaches, stomach-ache , backache or muscle aches
- reduced interest in activities you use to enjoy
- feeling emotionally numb
- hyperventilating
- thoughts of harming yourself or your baby
- recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
When left untreated, postpartum depression can last for months or even longer. It is important to get help if you think you have postpartum depression.Let your healthcare provider know. He will get you the all the help you need.
