A mucus plug blocks the opening of the cervix to prevent bacteria from entering the uterus during pregnancy. This plug is expelled during labor and delivery to allow the baby to pass through the cervix.
How soon after the passage of the mucus plug will labor begin ?
The passage of the mucus is a sign that your cervix is dilating. It also indicates that the body is preparing for delivery. Labor could be hours, days or even weeks away as the cervix gradually opens.
What is the appearance of the mucus plug ?
It is usually clear, slightly pink or blood tinged in color. It may also be a sticky discharge or stringy mucus. Some women may not even notice the loss of the mucus plug since there is already an increase in vaginal discharge during pregnancy.
Call your health care provider if :
- the discharge suddenly becomes bright red
- the amount of discharge exceeds an ounce which is about 2 tablespoons
This could be an indication of a complications such a placenta previa or placental abruption.
However if the discharge is normal in color, there is no urgent need to call the doctor. You should however notify your provider at your next visit.
