Fetal hiccups usually occur in the second or third trimester even though it can be as early as the first trimester. They cause the mother to feel little spasms in her belly that are different from other pregnancy movements.
What causes fetal hiccups ?
Some of the causes of fetal hiccups include the following :
- contraction of the diaphragm : This occurs when the developed nervous system sends a signal to the brain so that the baby can begin breathing
- cord compression : Occasionally the cord may wrap around the neck of the fetus and restrict blood flow. This will cause increase movement and hiccups in the baby. These are rare and usually happens overtime as the fetus move within the womb
- reflex movement : Fetal hiccups may also be as a result of the fetus developing the reflex to suckle. It is a practice for when the mother breastfeeds her baby. This is important because it helps prevent the aspiration of milk into the lungs and choking the baby.
You should know that fetal hiccup is normal and shouldn’t cause any concerns. It will subside in time.
What should mother do about fetal hiccups ?
Mother’s should not be concerned about fetal hiccups. You can just monitor it just like you do with fetal kicks and report any concerns. This will prevent unnecessary anxiety in the mother. There may be times when pregnant women wonder if it a hiccup or fetal movement.
