During pregnancy , extra demands are placed on your body to help your unborn child grow and develop. Staying healthy is very essential for a healthy pregnancy. The immune system is slightly lower during pregnancy to  prevent the body of the pregnant woman from rejecting the baby. Pregnant  women are therefore more vulnerable to infections.You can boost your immune system during pregnancy mainly through healthy diet and exercise.

Boosting your immune system during pregnancy

 

Healthy diet : It is important to eat healthy during pregnancy. A healthy diet include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. These  contain antioxidants and vitamins which help fight infections.  Dark green leaves, whole grains, lean meat  and fish also contain important nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acids, proteins , zinc, vitamins and so on, all of which are crucial for a healthy pregnancy.

 

Prenatal vitamins : It is important to take prenatal vitamins throughout pregnancy. During the first trimester  when morning sickness is common, prenatal vitamins can replace the lost nutrients. It also contains vitamins and minerals for the proper growth of the baby. It should however not be used to replace food.

 

Stay up to date with your vaccines : During pregnancy, it is essential to get the flu shot  during the flu season  to protect yourself against the virus. It you lack any vaccines such as Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis ) that can be given during pregnancy, your health care provider will recommend you get it.

 

Avoid sick people : Limit your contact with sick people during pregnancy. You should practice good personal hygiene such as washing your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and disinfecting surfaces such as door knobs, cooking surfaces and telephone. Ask your doctor about which household disinfectants are safe to use.

 

Stay active : Get involved in gentle exercises such as walking and prenatal yoga. Exercises can boost white blood cells which helps fight infections. Prenatal yoga helps relieve stress during pregnancy.
