Allergies are common during pregnancy. When your body reacts to invaders such as pollen and pet dander, that overreaction is known as allergy. Some people are genetically predisposed to allergies while other people develop it based on early repeated exposure to potential allergens.
Allergies may be diagnosed by symptoms and medical history alone. Sometimes allergen testing may be ordered. Skin testing is the most common allergy testing.
What are the signs of allergies ?
Symptoms include :
- sneezing
- nasal congestion
- watery eyes
- itching
- hives
- swelling of the face
What is the effect of allergies on my unborn child ?
Your baby will likely not be affected unless you have an anaphylaxis reaction which interrupts with airflow.
How are allergies treated during pregnancy ?
It is best to avoid exposure to allergen whenever possible. Allergy medications can be used but it is important to use them under the supervision of your doctor.
Over the counter antihistamines are considered safe during pregnancy. However you should ALWAYS ask your doctor before taking any medication during pregnancy. Corticosteroid nasal sprays can also be considered. Allergy shots are considered safe during pregnancy. You can continue having allergy shots during pregnancy. However you shouldn’t start allergy shots during pregnancy.
NOTE : Oral decongestants should be avoided especially during the first trimester. They may increase your risk for birth defects.
How can allergies be prevented ?
You may not be able to prevent it but you can reduce your risk by avoiding coming into contact with allergens. You should
- stay away from pets
- seal your pillow and mattress in dust-mite-proof casing
- wash your bedding weakly in hot water to kill dust mites
- use a filtering vacuum
