There is no fixed age at which a child is ready to be potty trained. However most children show interest around 2 years of age. There is no need to rush. If you start potty training earlier than you’re suppose to, you may end up taking longer to train your child.
How do i know my child is ready for potty training ?
If your answers to most of these question are yes, then your child is ready to be potty trained. If your answers to most of these questions are no, then you might want to wait a little bit.
Physical signs
- is your child able to coordinate enough walking or even run steadily ?
- does your child have at least 2 hours of dry period between naps?
- does your child regular well-formed bowel movements at times that are predictable ?
Behavioral signs
- does your child complain about wet or dirty diapers ?
- can your child pull his pants up and down ?
- does your child tell you through facial expressions and gestures that he needs to go to the bathroom ?
- can your child sit on or rise up from the potty chair ?
- can your child sit quietly at one place for about two to five minutes ?
- has your child shown interest in the toilet, potty chair or wearing underwear ?
Cognitive signs
- can your child understand or follow basic instructions ?
- does your child have special names for urine and stool ?
Most kids are physically ready before emotionally ready for potty training. Your child must want to use the toilet and be willing to cooperate with you. He must be in training pants rather than diapers. If your child is not ready , it will take longer to train him and become more frustrating .
