Carpal tunnel syndrome is common during pregnancy. It is a group of problems including swelling , tingling, numbness or weakness in the fingers, hands, thumb and occasionally arms. They occur when there is pressure on the median nerves within the wrist. Symptoms usually go away after pregnancy. Carpal tunnel syndrome tends to get worse at night. It usually affect both hands and begins or gets worse at the second half of pregnancy when fluid retention is common.
What causes carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy ?
Your wrist is made up of small bones that forms a narrow groove or carpal tunnel. Ligaments and a nerve known as the median nerve goes through this tunnel from the forearm into your hand. Fluid retention and swelling which occurs during pregnancy can increase the pressure in this tunnel, thereby pressing on the median nerve. Pressure on this nerve causes symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
How can i manage carpal tunnel syndrome ?
To help you deal with the pain, you may have to do the following :
- figure out what brings on your symptoms and try to avoid them. You also have to take frequent breaks from repetitive actions.
- engage in exercises that stretches and strengthen the muscles in the hand and forearm
- wear a wrist splint to keep your wrist straight especially at night
- find ways to protect your wrist as you go about your daily activities
Call your doctor if symptoms interfere with your daily activities or before taking any pain medication. If symptoms are severe, you may be referred to a specialist. Note that symptoms gradually disappear after delivery. However if they do persist, mention it to your doctor . He may refer you to a specialist.
