How your 1 week old baby is growing
It’s been only a week since your newborn arrived. His eyesight is still not clear. Your baby can see best when things are 8 to 15 inches away. Babies are born nearsighted so she can only see clearly when you are holding her close.
Dont worry if your 1 week old doesn’t look you straight in the eye. Newborns tend to focus on your hairline, eyebrows and moving mouth. Looking at your baby during feeding encourages him to focus better. As she gets to know you, eye to eye contact will be better. During feeding try moving your head slowly from side to side to see if she will follow. This will build her eye muscles.
Her umbilical cord may or may not fall off. If your baby is circumcised, his penis will start to heal right under your eyes. He may encounter skin issues from acne to white spots to red blotches. Leave them alone. They will resolve on their own.
Your life
Your milk comes in 2 to 4 days after the delivery of your baby. This will cause your breast to be tender or hard and hot . You can relief this discomfort by doing the following :
- apply warm compressions to your breast after each feeding
- take a warm bath
- wear supportive nursing bra
- express a little bit of milk from each breast before breastfeeding. Fully engorged breast may make latching on quite difficult for the baby
- nurse every 2 to 3 hours
- stay well hydrated by drinking lots of fluid to maintain milk supply
- apply cold compressions after feeding
