Babies learn to sit up independently between the ages of 4 to 7 months. Your baby will probably have mastered rolling over and holding her head up. Around 8 months , most babies are able to sit up without support for several minutes.
How can i help my learn how to sit up ?
Strong neck muscles and head control are necessary for sitting up. This can be achieved by the baby lifting her head and chest. You can help by encouraging your baby to play face down and then prompting her to look up using bright toys or even a mirror. This is also a good way to make sure that your baby’s hearing and vision are on track.
Once the baby can sit up fairly well, put intriguing toys and objects out of her reach. This will catch her attention as she learns to balance with her arms.
It is always important to stay close to the baby when she learns how to sit just in case she topples over.
What should i do if my baby is not sitting up ?
Babies reach different milestones differently, some more quickly than others. If your baby isn’t able to hold her head up steadily at about 4 month or if she hasn’t starting propping herself on her arms or she is unable to sit up by 9 months, let your pediatrician know.
You should keep in mind that premature babies reach different milestone later than their peers.
NOTE
After your baby is able to sit up independently, he will start learning how to crawl. The baby will become very mobile at this point so it is essential that your house is childproof. You should also know that most pediatricians recommend that babies be able to sit up with minimal support before starting them on solids.
