Packing for the hospital to have a baby can be overwhelming. It is better to get some things ready before your delivery date just in case you go into labor early. Here is a list of some items you may find useful during labor and delivery.

Things you may need when packing for the hospital or birth center

 
Things new moms may need

  • pre registration forms from the hospital
  • health insurance card
  • a picture ID ( driver’s license or other ID )
  • nursing bra – to support swollen, tender breast and keep breast pads in place
  • breast pads to help stop leak by absorbing milk
  • nursing pillows – can be used for breastfeeding or bottle feeding to reduce the strain on your arms, neck and back when feeding your baby
  • cell phone and charger
  • several maternity underpants if you don’t like what the hospital provides
  • slippers
  • a book on newborn care
  • night-gown and robe
  • socks
  • going home outfit
  • toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion , hairbrush, soap to make you more comfortable.
  • sanitary pads – the hospital will provide this but if you prefer to bring your favorite brand, you may do so
  • pillow from home to make you more comfortable. However just make sure it has a different color pillow case to help distinguish from that of the hospital
  • eye glasses and contact cases if you use these
  • extra wash cloth
  • magazines that you can read or anything that will make you comfortable

 
Things baby may need

  • infant car seat and head support – you will not be allowed to leave the hospital without one
  • going home outfit
  • booties or socks
  • hats
  • receiving blankets
  • mittens

 
Things your partner may need

  • change of clothes
  • toiletries
  • bath suit if you are planning on a water birth
  • snacks
  • camera for taking photos and video
  • address books to contact friends and families about the arrival of the newborn
  • quarters  and credit card for phone boots and vending machines. You must remember that not all hospitals allow cell phones
  • ipod or CD player to help both you and your partner relax during and after delivery

 
Things sibling may need

  • crayons, coloring pages, papers and markers
  • books
  • toys
  • snacks
  • gifts from big brother/sister to the baby
  • gift from mom and baby to big brother/sister
