Are you breastfeeding and thinking of getting a tattoo? You may have some safety concerns. The inks used for tattoos are safe. This is because they are injected into the skin and stay there. They do not get into the circuitry system. However, the needles used for the process is what poses some risk.
Tattoo while breastfeeding
General information about tattoo applies to breastfeeding women too. Local and systemic infections are the most common risks faced by people who get a tattoos. Local infections can occur if the after care guidelines are not followed. This includes keeping the tattoo clean with mild soap and water, keeping the tattoo out of the sun and not picking at the scabs. Systemic infection may occur if the tattooist does not follow the universal precautions. Infections such as hepatitis , HIV and tetanus can occur.
Choosing a tattooist
Screening of the tattooist and the shop is very important. You should also check with the local health department for local laws and regulations. Professional tattooist should follow universal guidelines such as
- using an autoclave to sterilize the tattoo machine
- bagging the equipments to prevent cross contamination
- single use inks, inks cups, gloves and needles
- thoroughly washing of your hands with disinfectant soap
According to La Leche League International LLLI, it is suggested that you wait until your child’s first birthday to give your body the chance to recover completely from childbirth before getting a tattoo.
Can i safely have my tattoo removed while breastfeeding ?
The removal of a tattoo can now be done using laser. This procedure is bloodless, low risk and has minimal side effects. You should know that the same aftercare for a tattoo applies to it’s removal.
