Car seat is very essential in protecting your child during travel. However, it can be difficult to know how to safely buckle it as the child grows. One of your most important jobs as a parent is to keep your child safe during travel. Proper use of car seat can keep kids safe from injuries and death during a car accident.
Age group and type of car seats
Infants and toddlers
Type of seat : Rear facing only seats or rear facing convertible seats.
General guidelines : All infants and toddlers should use a rear facing car seat until they are at least 2 years old or until they reach the highest weight and height allowed by the car seat’s manufacturer.
Toddlers and preschoolers
Type of car seat : Convertibles seats and forward facing seats with harnesses.
General guidelines : When a child outgrows the weight and height for his convertible rear facing car seat, he should use a front facing car seat with a harness as long as possible, up to the highest weight and height allowed by the car seat manufacturer .
School – aged children
Type of car seat : Booster seats
General guidelines : All children who have outgrown the forward facing car seat in terms of weight and height should use a belt positioning boosters seat until the vehicle car seat fits well. This should typically be between the ages of 8 to 12 years old and when they’ve reached around 4 feet 9 inches in height.
Older children
Type of car seat : Seat belt
General guidelines : When children are old and big enough for a vehicle seat belt, they should always use a lap and shoulder seat belt for optimal protection. All children younger than 13 years old should use be restrained in the rear seat of vehicles for maximum protection.
