Most baby’s teeth sprout between 4 to 7 months. The two bottom front teeth (lower central incisors) are usually the first to appear. This is then followed by the two top front teeth (upper central incisors). Some of the signs of teething include drooling, sore or tender gums, crankiness and chewing on solid objects. Teething can be uncomfortable for babies and this makes it such an ordeal for both parents and babies.
Ways to treat teething pain
The tips may help you manage teething pain
Cold things : You can soothe the baby’s gum using a chilled teething ring or cold wash cloth or spoon. Do not give your baby a frozen teething ring. Contact with extremely cold temperature can be dangerous.
Apply pressure : You can use a clean finger or a moistened gauze pad to rub the baby’s gum. When babies feel the pressure on the gum, it distracts their brains from the from the sensation of toothing pain.
Munch on hard food : If your baby is eating solids, give him something edible like carrot to gnaw on. It is however very essential to keep an eye on your baby. Any small piece that breaks off can choke the baby.
Over the counter remedy : Over the counter medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Children’s Motrin, others) may help. You have to AVOID medications that contain the pain reliever benzocaine. Benzocaine has been associated with the methemoglobinemia. This condition is rare but fatal condition. It reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood.
Call your doctor if the baby develops fever, is uncomfortable or have other symptoms unrelated to teething.
