Ways to soothe a fussy baby

Hold the baby : You can hold your baby in your arms while making sure you lay her entire body on her left side. This will help with digestion. Give the baby a gently rub on the back. Remember to always place the baby on her back in her crib when she goes to sleep.

Swaddle the baby : Swaddling your baby in a blanket gives her a sense of security.  Use a large, thin blanket . You can ask the nurse to show you how to do it correctly.

Turn on a calming sound : These sounds remind the baby of being inside the womb. The sounds can be white noise device, the humming sound of a fan or the recording of a heartbeat.

Feed your baby : If the  baby is crying and turns her head toward you when you stroke your cheeks or is putting her hands in her mouth, it is probably time to feed her.  However you have to note that overfeeding the baby can also make her uncomfortable. Try to wait between 2 and 2 1/2 hours from the beginning of one feeding to the next.

Offer pacifier : If it is not time to feed the baby, offer her a pacifier. Many  infants are calmed by sucking.

If your  baby’s fussiness is due to food sensitivity, you may need to change her diet.

  • for breastfed babies, the mother has to change her diet. Watch out if some milk product and caffeine make baby fussy. If dietary changes make no difference, you can resume your diet.
  • for bottle fed baby,  you may have to ask your doctor to try a different formula.

Limit nap time : Limit nap time to no longer than 3 hours a day. This can help the baby sleep well at night. You should also avoid distractions such as bright light and television when changing or feeding baby at night.

Keep a diary : Look out the times  your baby cries such as after meals and how long your baby cries. Note these behaviors down and talk to your doctor. It will help him to better find out what your baby’s crying is related to.
