Ibuprofen is usually not recommended during pregnancy. This medication is also known in other brand names such as Motrin and Advil. Ibuprofen is a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug NSAID. NSAIDs should not be used in the first two trimesters unless the benefits outweigh the potential risk to the fetus. They should not be used at all during the third trimester unless the doctor advices so.
Taking ibuprofen during early pregnancy
A few studies suggest that taking ibuprofen during early pregnancy slightly increases your risk for a miscarriage. However other studies have not shown any association. There is a concern that this drug may interfere with implantation even though it has not be clearly established.
Taking ibuprofen in the last trimester
This medication should be avoided in the third trimester. It can cause the premature closure of the ductus arteriosus which is a vessel in the fetal heart. This can lead to high blood pressure in the fetal heart (pulmonary hypertension). It may also inhibit labor or cause reduced amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios). Ibuprofen should therefore be used ONLY under doctor’s supervision during the third trimester.
What if i need to take ibuprofen throughout pregnancy because of a medical condition.
In this case, your doctor will put you on the lowest dose possible. Studies have not found an overall increased risk of birth defects, low birth weight or preterm labor with the use of NSAIDs in the first and second trimesters. Using this medication in the third trimester will warrant close monitoring by your health care provider. He will closely monitor your baby’s heart and amniotic fluid level.
Can i take ibuprofen if I’m breastfeeding ?
Be sure to let your doctor know if you are nursing. Ibuprofen enters breast milk in low doses.
