Breastfeeding and sex
Breastfeeding has its numerous benefits. It reduces the risk of infections, asthma, some cancers and allergies in newborns. Breastfed babies are less likely to be obese, have high cholesterol or diabetes. It also benefits the mother. It reduces her risk of ovarian and breast cancers and osteoporosis after menopause. Some people say breastfeeding boost their libido. They take full advantage of the birth control benefits of exclusive breastfeeding. Others also say that it has had an adverse effect on their sex life.
Effect of breastfeeding on sex life of new parents.
Childbirth can cause a lot of stress to the body.After child birth,sleep deprivation and
demands on being a new mom can also have a toll of the new parents. Hormonal changes during breastfeeding can also put a strain on the new parent’s relationship.
Factors that may contribute to decreased sex during breastfeeding
Things that can decrease a woman’s libido during breastfeeding include the following :
- fatigue due to demands of being a new mom
- vaginal dryness due to low estrogen levels which may cause pain during sex
- leaking milk from the breast during sex
- low self image due to sagging breast, stretch marks and body weight
- mom may feel she has been touched enough due to having her baby around her all the time. So she has less interest in being touched by the partner
Other ways to get intimate during breastfeeding
Let your partner know how you feel about having sex. Being intimate does not mean having sex alone . There are other ways you can get intimate , some of which include the following :
- hugging often
- taking a bath together
- getting a baby sitter so that you and your partner can have dinner dates and movie nights
- kissing and making out in the couch
- making food together
- partner giving you a massage with scented oil
If these steps dont help, you can seek the help of a certified sex therapist.
NOTE : Breastfeeding is one of the best gifts you can give your baby. Know that these problems are short lived. Talk to your partner and let him now that things will get better as the baby grows.
