Probiotics are living microorganisms. The majority of them are bacteria followed by yeast. The most commonly used include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces. They are similar to naturally occurring microorganisms found in the intestines or gut of humans. They support digestive health.
Are probiotics safe during pregnancy ?
Probiotics may be safe during pregnancy. However, there is limited research on the various varieties. They may therefore not be completely safe.
According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Institute of Health (NIH), probiotics may be considered safe during pregnancy. The risk of contracting bacteremia from taking Lactobacillus probiotics is less than 1 per 1 million. The risk of acquiring fungemia from Saccharomyces boulardii is approximately 1 per 5.6 million individuals taking the it.
They are not linked to any malformations or miscarriages even with the limited research we have. The NLM and NIH therefore concludes that the use of probiotics in pregnancy and lactation poses no risk.
Which foods contain probiotics ?
They can be in the form of supplements or found in foods such as
- live yoghurt
- live yoghurt drinks
- fermented and unfermented milk
- miso and tempeh ( made from fermented soya beans)
- some juices and soya beans
How do probiotics works during pregnancy ?
Reasearch is still ongoing on the exact mechanism. However, the thinking is that the good bacteria attack destructive invaders. They help reduce bad bacteria which increases the risk of infection and other health problems.

Probiotics support digestive health and helps it work efficiently. They help your intestines move food along and reduce bad bacteria. This helps reduce your risk of any health complications.

- infection diarrhea
- irritable bowel syndrome
- antibiotic related diarrhea
- bacterial virginosis
- Reduced Pediatric atopic dermatitis
- inflammatory bowel disease
How common is probiotics used during pregnancy ?
Diarrhea and constipation are common during pregnancy and as a result probiotics are commonly used during pregnancy. However there is no recommended daily use. Not enough research has been done on that.
