How often would a woman carrying multiples see her health care provider ?
The first trimester prenatal schedule may be the same as it is for a single pregnancy. However as you progress into the second and third trimesters , your doctor may want to see you often. He may want to see you every 2 weeks in the second trimester and every week in the third trimester. You schedule may change due to the health of you and your baby.
Why do I need more prenatal care visits ?
Carrying multiples put you at high risk of pregnancy complications. Your health care provider will therefore want to see you more often to monitor the health of you and your baby. This will help him detect any complications early and take steps to treat or prevent these complications. If complications do occur, then your prenatal visits will be more frequent. Your health care provider will give you a prenatal schedule that is beneficial for both you and your baby.
What kinds of complication are women carrying multiples at risk of ?
You may be at risk of the following complications if you are carrying multiples .
- preeclampsia or pregnancy induced hypertension
- preterm labor
- intrauterine growth restriction
- gestational diabetes
- fetal loss
