Heart palpitations is a common pregnancy symptom. It is a sensation that you heart is racing or skipping a beat. This is usually as a result of the extra work load on the heart to pump up to 50% more blood around the body. It is usually nothing to worry about but contact your health care provider if you have some concerns.
What are the causes of heart palpitations during pregnancy ?
During pregnancy, the heart pumps up more blood to accommodate the growing baby. This causes acceleration of the heart rate. These cardiovascular changes may cause your heart to palpitate all the time.
Other causes of heart palpitations during pregnancy include the following :
- too much caffeine consumption
- exercises
- stress and anxiety
What can i do about heart palpitations during pregnancy ?
If caffeine consumption is the result of your heart palpitations, cut down or eliminate caffeine from your diet.
You can also reduce your risk of stress related palpitations by engaging in relaxation activities such as breathing or deep relaxation exercises. Prenatal yoga and prenatal massages may also help.
When should i contact my doctor
During pregnancy, you should contact your health care provider anytime you experience unusual symptoms. Occasionally, heart palpitations may be the sign a medical condition such hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). This condition may have an effect on your developing baby so it is essential to get diagnosed and treated.
If heart palpitation is accompanied by dizziness, difficulty breathing and fainting, call your doctor right away.
