Why some women prefer natural birth .

Why do women want to have a natural birth given the reputation it has been known for being unbelievably painful, incredibly hard, and/or terribly long? There are as many reasons as there are mothers. One of the most common reasons is that mothers are embracing labor and birth as something they are designed to do and embracing that part of their femininity. Others believe that the potential exposure of babies to medications or other interventions is too risky for them.

If you are interested in having a natural birth, one of the first things you need to do as new parents is to define exactly what ‘natural’ means to you. ‘Natural’ means different things to different people. Some people say natural birth and mean vaginal birth with any other kinds of interventions. Others define natural birth as unassisted childbirth, there is a huge range of ‘natural’. Define it for yourselves.

After you define what you are looking for in a natural birth, discuss what you are looking for with your healthcare provider. Make sure that your healthcare provider is on board. Some healthcare providers are not supportive of natural birth and others are incredibly helpful and supportive. It may be that you need to change healthcare provider, so be open to it.

Write a birth plan. Writing a birth plan at minimum will allow you to consider many different options.
Hire a doula. A doula can greatly increase the chances of having a great birth experience. Even if your birth does not go as planned, as so often happens, a doula can help. A doula helps reassure the mother that things are progressing normally, a doula can also reassure the father (or partner) that things are progressing and what his partner is experiencing is normal.

Take care of yourself through your pregnancy. If you maintain good health, physically and emotionally, you will greatly increase your chances of having the natural birth you desire. However, nothing is a guarantee.
Another thing you need to do is to make sure that you take a childbirth education course so that you and your partner know what to expect.

Natural birth is completely possible for most women, but it does not mean that it is easy. Pregnancy, labor, and delivery should be considered a marathon not a sprint. People train and work for marathons for months, if you approach birth the same way you’ll be in a much better position to achieve a natural birth.
