Baby hiccups is common. Babies start hiccupping in the womb. During the first year of life, they experience bouts of hiccups. Hiccups results from contractions in the baby’s diaphragm. It often stops by itself but sometimes hiccups may make the baby uncomfortable. There are however ways to alleviate this discomfort.
Ways to get rid of baby hiccups.
Change your baby’s feeding habits : The feeding habits may help relief hiccups in babies.
- feed your baby frequently
- burp the baby in-between feedings to bring out the trapped air that from the baby’s stomach
- change positions during feeding. It is also important to sit the baby upright after feeding to prevent air from settling in the stomach
- make sure the baby is latched on correctly
- hold the baby bottle at a 45 % angle during feeding to enable the air to settle at the bottom of the bottle
- give the baby something to suck on. A pacifier can help relieve your newborn’s hiccups
Other ways that may help relieve your baby’s hiccups include :
- massaging your baby’s back. Put your baby in an upright position and give him a gentle back rub to loosen his muscles and relax his diaphragm
- give baby gripe water. Even though there is no scientific proof, many nursing mothers have used it to relief newborn hiccups
NOTE
If everything else fails, just relax and wait. Hiccups will not harm the baby and you don’t have to do anything to help them go away.
