A concussion is also known as traumatic brain injury. It’s brain injury that affects the way the brain functions. Baby concussion can be more severe because of the small size of the baby’s body. Concussion is usually as a result of a blow to the head however, violently shaking the head and the upper part of the body can also cause it. This condition is usually temporary .
What are the symptoms of baby concussion ?
Infants are not able to express how they feel so it is important for parents and caregivers to look out for these signs .
- dizziness which may appear as loss of balance when walking or sitting
- repeated vomiting
- feeling irritable or anxious for no apparent reason
- temporary loss of consciousness
- sleeping more or less than usual
- appearing dazed
- change in eating habit
- lack of interest in favorite toy
- excessive crying
- gets tired more easily than normal
- looking confused
- numbness or tingling
- lack of coordination
Call the emergency services or 911 immediately if your child experiences the following symptoms :
- repeated vomiting
- loss of consciousness
- seizures
- drowsiness or cannot be awakened
- one pupil larger than the other
- slurred speech or wobble walking
- spontaneous fluid oozing from the nose or ears
- baby appears not to recognize you or his favorite toys
It is recommended that you seek medical attention for your infant right away. This will enable the pediatrician determine if the concussion is serious or not. It is also recommended that a child with concussion rests as much as possible to enable the brain heal. During this time , it is important to watch for signs of returning or new symptoms. It is common for additional symptoms to show up about 2 weeks after the incident.
How to prevent baby concussion ?
These measures may help prevent to baby concussion.
- children should wear appropriate headgear and safety equipment when playing sports or riding anything with wheels
- childproof your house to reduce your baby’s chances of falling or any injuries
- use appropriate car seat or safety belt for your child to prevent injuries in event of an accident
