What is a tilted uterus ?
A tilted uterus is also known as tipped uterus or retroverted uterus. The uterus is normally in a straight, vertical position. However in women with a tipped or tilted uterus, the uterus is tipped backwards towards the back of the pelvis.
What causes a tilted uterus ?
A tipped uterus may occur for several reasons including the following :
- childbirth may cause the ligaments holding the uterus to stretch therefore causing the uterus to tilt
- scarring from adhesion as a result of endometriosis or fibroids
- as a woman matures, the uterus may not move forward
What are the symptoms of a tilted uterus ?
This condition is usually asymptomatic , however if symptoms do occur they include the following :
- painful intercourse
- painful menstruation
Other symptoms also include :
- urinary tract infections
- mild incontinence
- back pain during intercourse
- having difficulty using a tampon
How is a tilted uterus diagnosed ?
A simple physical examination can reveal a tipped uterus. This can be done through a routine pelvic exam.
Are there any treatment options ?
Surgery is recommended if you have a retroverted uterus and are experiencing symptoms. The surgery can reposition the uterus from it’s backward to a forward facing position
A uterus suspension can be done to reduce painful intercourse. The UPLIFT procedure is a new and improved method of uterine suspension. This procedure is able to provide some relief for painful intercourse and in some circumstances, painful menstruation.
A tipped uterus can also be repositioned by the following :
- knee-chest exercise. This can reposition the uterus temporarily and may not help if tipped uterus is caused by endometriosis, fibroid tumors, or pelvic infections.
- pessary which is a plastic or silicone device that is placed in the vagina to reposition a tipped uterus
What is the effect of tilted uterus on my pregnancy ?
Tilted uterus is usually resolved around pregnancy week 10 to 12. The movement of the uterus forward (untilited) will have no effect on your pregnancy. If your uterus does not move forward during pregnancy, this can cause a miscarriage. However this is rare.
NOTE
This condition rarely causes fertility problems. It is only thought to be the cause of infertility after all possible causes of fertility problems have been ruled out. Your doctor will recommend uterine suspension or UPLIFT procedure if that is the case.
