What is croup ?
Croup is a distraction in breathing and a barking cough which is as a result of swelling around the vocal cords. It is common in children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years even though it can happen at any age. It usually occurs around the months of October and March, but it can also occur at any time. Croup is usually not serious but hospitalization may be necessary in severe cases.
Croup is a viral infection , most often caused by the parainfluenza virus. However, it may also be caused by allergies, acid reflux or breathing something that irritates the lungs.
What are the symptoms of croup ?
The main symptom of croup is a deep, hoarse cough that sounds like a seal barking. It usually starts as a mild cold . The child may also have trouble breathing or make an abnormally high-pitched musical sound when breathing in. It usually gets worse at night and may last about 5 to 6 nights.
How is croup treated ?
Most cases of croup can be safely managed at home.
- set a cool air vaporizer in the child’s room for a few nights
- expose the child to moist or cool air such as steamy bath or cool outside air at night
- give your child pain relievers such s acetaminophen to make him more comfortable
- DO NOT use cough medicine until directed by the doctor
Your doctor may also prescribe the following medications .
- antibiotics in some cases of croup
- steroids taken orally or through an inhaler
Your child will need emergency treatment and hospitalization if he
- has bluish skin color
- is not drinking enough fluids
- has breathing problems that is getting worse
- is really tired
During hospitalization, your child may receive the following treatment.
- steroid medicine through IV
- fluids through the vein for dehydration
- antibiotics intravenously
- breathing medicine given through a nebulizer
- oxygen tent placed over the crib
How dangerous is croup ?
Croup is usually not serious. It goes away between 3 to 7 days. Severe cases can however be life threatening and require immediate attention. The child may have difficulty breathing or may stop breathing all together.
When should I contact my doctor ?
Call your doctor if your child has the following symptoms.
- bluish lips or skin
- drooling
- makes a high-pitched sound when breathing
- difficulty breathing
- croup is caused by inhaled object or insect bite
- there is a tugging-in of the muscles between the ribs when breathing in
