Having a baby can bring so much joy into your life. It can also be stressful and have an emotional toll on you. Most new moms feel a range of emotions such as sadness, anxiety, exhaustion, irritation or nervousness. All these feelings known as baby blues are normal especially during the first couple of weeks after delivery. Baby blues are the least severe form of postpartum depression. About 70 to 80% of new moms experience this. Baby blues may last a few minutes up to a few hours a day and may disappear within about 2 weeks after delivery.

What causes baby blues ?

 

The exact cause of baby blues is unknown. However it is thought to be related to hormonal changes during pregnancy and after delivery. These hormonal changes may cause chemical changes in the brain that may cause depression. The stress of pregnancy and child-birth as well as changes in daily routine when the baby arrives can also contribute to baby blues.

 

What are the symptoms of baby blues ?

 

Symptoms of baby blues include the following :

  • mood changes
  • anxiety
  • sadness
  • crying for no apparent reason
  • insomnia
  • difficulty concentrating
  • restlessness
  • impatience

 

How do you manage baby blues ?

 

Taking care of yourself is the best way to manage baby blues. Here are some steps you can take to manage this condition.

  • eat healthy
  • go outside and enjoy some fresh air and to get a change of environment
  • talk to someone you trust about how you feel
  • ask for help from friends and family so you can have time to enjoy your baby
  • don’t expect to be perfect during the first few weeks of delivery. Things will get better as time goes on.

 
NOTE

If these symptoms last for more than 14 days, it could be a sign of postpartum depression. Contact your healthcare provider right away.
