Are laxative safe during pregnancy ?
Although some laxatives are safe to use during pregnancy, it is better to use natural remedies before using medication.
Your doctor may recommend starting with mild laxative such as milk of magnesia. He may also recommend Metamucil or a stool softener which contains docusate .
If these don’t work, your doctor may recommend a stronger medication. It is essential that you do not overuse laxatives. They cause diarrhea which may lead to dehydration.
Which laxatives are unsafe during pregnancy ?
Mineral oils are usually not used during pregnancy because they may interfere with the absorption of nutrients and vitamins in the mother. They may also cause severe bleeding in the newborn infant.
Saline laxatives contain magnesium, potassium, or phosphates . They should be avoided if kidney is not functioning normally.
Castor oil should not be used because it may cause contractions of the womb.
Some laxatives especially the bulk-formers contain large amounts of sodium and sugars. They may cause unwanted side effects such as increased high blood pressure and cause water retention in the body.
NOTE : Do not take any medications during pregnancy without asking your doctor first.
