Diarrhea during pregnancy should be taken seriously. Diarrhea is when you have two or more loose bowel movements in a 24 hour period. It can be deadly if steps are not taken to make sure you are well hydrated.
What causes diarrhea during pregnancy ?
Diarrhea during pregnancy is caused by a lot of factors.
Changes is diet can lead to loose stools. When you find out that you are pregnant, you may change your diet to get enough nutrients from your food. This change can upset your stomach and cause diarrhea.
Hormonal changes can also result in diarrhea. These hormones can slow down the digestion process and lead to watery stools.
Pregnancy can also cause you to react to food you have been eating all along with no problems. These foods may cause stomach upset.
Other causes of watery stools during the first and second trimester may also be due to bacterial or viral infection.
Diarrhea during the third trimester.
This is common and likely to occur as you approach your due date. It could be a sign that labor is near. You should however not be alarmed if you have diarrhea weeks before your due date. It is just the way some women’s body prepare for labor ahead.
How is diarrhea treated during pregnancy ?
Most cases of diarrhea clears up within a couple of days . However it is essential to stay hydrated. Drinks lots of water, broth and juice to stay hydrated and to help replace electrolytes your body has lost. The water will replenish lost fluid, the juice will replenish potassium levels and the broth will replenish sodium levels.
Your diet should consist of banana, rice, apple and toast, which is called BRAT diet. Try to avoid yogurt and milk.
In severe cases, you may be given fluids though IV at the hospital.
Call your doctor if diarrhea doesn’t clear up. If your diarrhea is caused by parasites or bacteria, you may need antibiotics. However if it is caused by a virus, antibiotics wont help. Call your doctor to know what is causing your watery stool.
