How effective is breastfeeding as a form of birth control ?
Breastfeeding is an effective form of birth control. This method known as lactational amenorrhea method LAM can be used within the first six months after giving birth.
You should note however that LAM only works if :
- your baby is less than 6 months old
- your baby is exclusively breastfed which means you do not substitute other foods. You must feed the baby no longer that every four hours during the day and every 6 hours at night. Your baby should also nurse from the breast (no pumping of breast milk)
- you have not had your period since you delivered (amenorrhea)
This form of birth control is about 98% effective. However you need to strictly adhere to the guidelines.
How does breastfeeding prevent pregnancy ?
Breastfeeding naturally suppresses the hormones necessary for ovulation.When there is no release of egg, pregnancy cannot occur.

- protects the baby against allergies and asthma
- passes antibodies from mother to baby to protect against certain infections
- increases mother and baby bonding

- reduces bleeding after delivery
- convenient
What are the risks associated with breastfeeding as a birth control option ?
Using breastfeeding as a form a birth control
- does not protect against sexually transmitted infections STI
- only works for about 6 months
- some women find it hard to exclusively breastfeed babies
TAKE NOTE
After 6 months even if your period has not returned, you should use another method of birth control. This is because you ovulate before your period comes, so you can still get pregnant.
You can use an additional backup form of birth control to be on a safe side to prevent you from getting pregnant. Some birth controls may reduce breast milk supply so discuss with your health care professional which option is best for you.
