Strep throat is a bacterial infection in the throat and tonsils. Most women get it during pregnancy. This infection causes the throat to be inflamed and irritated, causing sudden severe sore throat. Streptococcal (strep) bacteria is responsible for strep throat and there are many different types of this bacteria. Some causes more serious illness that others.

What is the difference between strep throat and group B streptococcus ?

Group B streptococcus on the other hand is a vaginal or rectal infection that can be passed on from mother to baby. Pregnant women are usually screened between 35 to 37 weeks for this infection. Group B streotoccocus infection is a common infection but it’s usually not passed on to the baby.

Symptoms of strep throat includes the following :
- intense sore throat
- red and swollen tonsils
- enlarged lymph nodes
- white spots on the throat an tonsils
- high fever
- difficulty eating and swallowing
- fatigue
- abdominal pain
- cough and sneezing
- headache
- excessive sweating
- loss of apetite
You do not have to have all these symptoms to have strep throat. If you have a combination of these symptoms, contact your health care provider.
How is strep throat treated during pregnancy ?
Strep throat is treated with antibiotics, the most common of which is are cephalexin, penicillin and amoxicillin . You must adhere to your doctor’s instructions about dosage. Not completing the full dose of antibiotics can lead to recurrent infection which can be harmful for both you and your baby.
How is strep throat managed during pregnancy ?
Here are some remedies you can take to manage strep throat during pregnancy.
- gargle warm salt water
- avoid cold liquids as these may aggravate sore throat
- you may drink caffeine free herbal tea such as green tea, chamomile tea and lemon tea with cinnamon to relieve soreness
- take recommended doses of pain reliever such as paracetamol . You can also take fever reducers
How can I prevent strep throat during pregnancy ?
You can reduce your risk of strep throat by observing good personal hygiene such as washing your hands regularly especially in public places. You should also stay well hydrated as this reduces your risk of infection during pregnancy
