Mathematics is a part of all of our lives, whether we like it or not. Learning math is a challenge for a lot of kids, and therefore many kids don’t have anything great to say about math. But who does? It’s tedious, and there is a lot of room for error, so many people do not get along with math. One of the most common phrases used amongst our younger generations is “I hate math”. It’s sad, but true.
Mathematics doesn’t have to be a bore, though. Sure, no kid wants to sit down, and fill out a worksheet front and back full of math problems. That is the exact kind of process that is making our children despise math. Think outside of the box, when you are trying to teach your children math. It doesn’t have to be boring, or tedious. Math can actually be a lot of fun, if you are committed to making it worthwhile.
You don’t have to stick your kids with worksheet after worksheet to break the ice on math. In fact, most of the time that is the wrong way of going about helping our children learn math. Children learn best through life experiences, and that is especially true for mathematics. Sometimes, you can help to teach your children about math, and they will not even realize that you are sneaking in a math lesson. Use the following activities to help your children learn math the more natural way, through everyday activities.
Cooking
Cooking is one of the best way to get kids to understand math in an easier way. Recipes are a very exact science, and can help teach your children math without them even realizing what is happening. And the best part is that your kids get to eat your math lesson after it is complete. Teach math an easier way, and prove to your children that math can be a rewarding process.
Give them an allowance
Many parents forget that an allowance will give their children a valuable learning experience. Letting your kids earn an allowance is a great way to teach your children about growing up, and responsibility. Coincidentally, it is also a great way to help your kids understand math. When your kids earn an allowance, they will be counting money, and adding the sum of their allowances.
Sports
Sports like basketball and American football are great for teaching kids math. They will need to learn to do math in order to play each sport, because it takes a lot of adding. Also, with American football, kids learn to subtract and multiply. You can lose yards in football, and each touchdown their team scores will be a multiple of six (not including extra point attempts). Sports are one of the best ways to teach kids about math, because they are incredibly fun and rewarding for children.
It doesn’t have to be a big ordeal helping your kids understand math a little bit better. You can help them learn math through everyday activities, and it is more natural for them to learn this way.
