Pregnancy week 5 is typically when most women find out about their pregnancy. This is mostly because they missed their periods or because their hormonal changes have become more apparent. The changes your body will go through in the coming weeks begin during this week, making it the toughest part of your pregnancy for most mothers. Besides, the first trimester starts from this week onwards, which any mother will say is the hardest to get through physically, mentally and emotionally.

How’s the Baby Doing At Pregnancy Week 5 ?

By pregnancy week 5, the embryo is finally measurable, even if it’s just .13 inches in size and looks like an apple seed. However, the growth of the embryo from here onwards would be fast and it would almost be double the size by the following week. The fetus will no longer look like a tadpole in this week as major body organs like the heart, liver, kidney and stomach start forming. Also, different systems like circulatory, digestive and nervous begin developing at this stage.

The Symptoms At Pregnancy Week 5

By pregnancy week 5, ignoring pregnancy symptoms isn’t possible anymore, especially due to the heightened pregnancy hormone levels in the body. Some symptoms that become very apparent by this time are:

  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Sore breasts and darkened nipples
  • Frequent urge to pee
  • Lightheadedness
  • Sensitivity to smells

What to Do

If you’re taking any prescription drugs, run them by your gynae right away to ensure their safety during pregnancy. You should also stop smoking and drinking alcohol right away and preferably reduce your caffeine intake. Continue taking your prenatal vitamins and schedule your first ob-gyn visit around this time.

In addition, keep tabs on your pregnancy more closely. Make a journal to note down your thoughts and feelings as well as the progress of your baby.  You can also consider joining a baby club to get support from other mothers and share your experience.
